What: Chef Bernhard Maringer and winemaker Axel Steigelmar Austrian cuisine is more than Wiener Schnitzel, Sachertorte and Viennese coffee houses. A fusion of influences from throughout the former Austro-Hungarian Empire that include Italy, Hungary, Germany and the Balkans, Austrian is among the most sophisticated cuisine in Europe today. Bernhard Maringer owner and chef of BierBeisl in Beverly Hills, is one of LA’s most ambitious and talented young chefs. (recent LA Times Review) Austrian by upbringing, Maringer, former Patina chef-de-cuisine, brings to LA a class of Austrian cooking rarely seen in the US. Shortly before opening BierBeisl, Bernhard contacted Blue Danube Wine Co. looking for the 09 Juris St. Laurent. Friend and famed German sommelier Gunnar Tietz, insisted it be on the opening wine list. European sommeliers recognize Weingut Juris as one of Austria’s premier red wine producers. Like his father, and his grandfather before him, wine maker and proprietor Axel Stiegelmar is dedicated to the tradition of Pinot Noir, and the local variety St. Laurent, native to his village of Gols in Burgenland, Eastern Austria. Axel will be visiting LA this May 4th to co-host an evening of authentic Austrian cuisine at BierBeisl with chef Maringer. It will be a rare opportunity to experience Austrian culture much the way you would in Vienna’s finest restaurants in the company of the craftsman responsible. It is sure to be a fabulous evening. Wines will be available for take home purchase including rare vintage library bottles this night only.
