#MarcMad First Round – We Need Your Help!

In case you haven’t seen, #MarcMad is the wine business’s answer to March Madness.

Last year’s conference focused on varieties (Grüner Veltliner was beaten out by Riesling, but that was solely a popularity contest… either way, we support it,) but this year’s conference focuses on wine regions – Old World vs. New World and regions from each being put against each other.

Austria earned the 16th seed spot – generally the wildcard – which means we’re up against one of the best known wine regions, Burgundy, who holds the first seed spot.

Let’s be clear, we have nothing against Burgundy and, usually, we hate competing against other countries (we all have our talents.) In fact, we believe Burgundy is a fabulous and sometimes we use them as a benchmark…. we don’t mind saying that some aged examples of Austria’s Grüner Veltliner wines can rival the best White Burgundy in the world, after all, we are roughly on the same latitude. And, have you ever tasted Chardonnay from Austria – it’s a small portion, but it’s delicious (we also have Pinot Noir!)

Now, we’re realistic, we know many people knew Burgundy before they knew Austria, especially in the US, but when you compare one region in France with an entire country, how can there be a contest? We have what Burgundy has and then some, plus Austria is home to the ultimate food wine (Grüner Veltliner)! Who doesn’t like to eat?

In short, your first instinct may be to go with the masses, it’s a safe choice, after all, but let us not forget that when top sommeliers were bored with Burgundy, Austria is where they turned. #JustSaying. If this hasn’t convinced you, please check out the argument by our, now, good friend Joel on the Marc Mad headquarters page – we think it’s pretty swell.

So please, help us out and head over to Twitter right now! All you have to do is cut and paste this phase into your text box and hit send:

#MarcMad … Austria all the way!

That wasn’t so hard, was it?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks so much for the great write-up on the incredible wines of Austria! I wanted to see them get a higher seed starting out so they could have a better chance but that wasn’t the way the expert panels saw it. It kills me to have to write in favour of Burgundy over Austria because I am a huge Austrian wine fan (as are many sommeliers as you stated!)

    We appreciate the support!
