#WineChat #Riesling: A Success!

Anyone who has a glass of Riesling invariably smiles #riesling #winechat #pg

In a whirlwind of acidmania last night, we successfully executed #WineChat #Riesling with the help of German Wines USA, Vins d’Alsace, and the Summer of Riesling along with some very enthusiastic acidhounds on twitter!

The event featured a side-by-side comparison tasting of German, Alsatian, and Austrian Riesling to demonstrate the variation in the variety from place-to-place and the expression of terroir found in the wines.

Here’s what we tasted:

Germany: Domänenweingut Schloss Schönborn Riesling Qualitätswein, Hattenheim Pfaffenberg 2010 ($52.99)
Alsace: Gustave Lorentz Riesling Reserve 2009 ($23.99)
Austria:   Fred Loimer Kamptal Riesling 2011 ($25), or Fritsch Riesling Wagram 2011 ($18) (each participant chose one of two)

Of course, others were brought in to taste as well by a plethora of participants which we always appreciate!

Having sat down with Paul Greico, the Riesling Overlord, and thus having had the chance to pick his brain, we were able to present a series of facts demonstrating the authenticity of Riesling and also an understanding of the differences in the three. Here’s a sampling:

  • “Why Riesling? Because in the way we define greatness in wine Riesling meets the 6 great criteria absolute.”- #PG #winechat
  • Six defining characters of wine: Balance, Complexity, Delicacy, Sense of place, Longevity, Yumminess #winechat #riesling  #pg
  • Balance: invariable in sweetness and acidity #winechat #riesling #pg
  • Complexity: range of flavor aromatics, citrus fruits, apples, pears, cherries, strawberries, floral, mineral #winechat #riesling #pg
  • Delicacy: relative lightness of behind with extraordinary power behind it. Measure is not in mass, but in penetration on the palate #winechat #riesling #pg
  • Sense of place: voice of place allows screams through the wine because it is unencumbered by all the crap winemakers throw at wine #winechat #riesling #pg
  • Long: extraordinary acidity, total, tartaric allows it to live forever. Acid is electric, there is life to the wine. #riesling #winechat #pg
  • Yumminess: self evident #Winechat #riesling #pg
  • Anyone who has a glass of Riesling invariably smiles #riesling #winechat #pg
  • To differentiate between the three in general two ends of the scale are Germany and Alsace then Austria #winechat #riesling #pg

Austria:

  •  Austrian Riesling is DRY. Shows power and fruit, but also intense minerality #winechat #riesling
  • Stylistically, Austrian Riesling varies from place-to-place, dependent on soils. Ex. Wachau is dif palate than Wagram #winechat #riesling
  • #Riesling loves primary rock soils; picks up hints of flint & slate in the wines #minerality #winechat
  • #Austrian #Riesling has the acid of Germany and the penetration of Alsace #pg #winechat
  • Highest Austrian #Riesling concentration is in in Vienna followed by Lower Austria #winechat
  • #Riesling makes up just over 4% of Austria’s grape production, but it’s still super important #winechat
  • #Austrian #Riesling is prized and has excellent aging potential #winechat
  • In some year botrytis allows for sweet styles (auslese & beerenauslese) of #Riesling in Austria #WineChat
  • #Riesling is one of the most important grapes of the #Wachau & is classified w/ Steinfeder, Federspiel, Smaragd by #CodexWachau #winechat http://www.vinea-wachau.at/fileadmin/downloads/Codex_Wachau_2011_ENG.pdf
  • #Riesling is a late-ripening grape, loves primary rock soils, often planted on steep slopes #winechat #Austria
  • #Austrian #Riesling is perfect for food – spicy, roast, al fresco, grilled, etc. #WineChat
  • #Loimer #Riesling is: 12.5% vol, RS 2.3 g/l, TA 6.8 g/l, loess soils, powerful mid palate, stone fruits, minerality, freshness  #winechat
  • #Loimer is certified under RESPEKT guidelines for biodynamic farming and under Lacon as organic in Europe. #winechat #riesling
  • #Loimer #Riesling Fruit is grown 100% on estate vineyards in and around Langenlois. #winechat
  • #Loimer  Had early & fast harvest, resulting in wines w/ slightly higher alcohol and lower RS than some yrs, lovely balance & texture #winechat
  • Kamptal has variety of terroir, ranging loess over gravel to parcels of primary rock and even volcanic, as on the Heiligenstein #winechat
  • Quote Fred Loimer: Wine is a drink, it should be simply enjoyed.  #winechat
  • Check out this recent article by @vinography on #Loimer http://www.vinography.com/archives/2012/06/weingut_fred_loimer_kamptal_au.html #winechat
  • Visionary Loimer is part of this cool wine gang http://bit.ly/Oy8bkh #winechat
  • #Wagram #Riesling is generally leaner and fruitier than #Kamptal #winechat
  • Kamptal is a wine region in Lower Austria & is also home to Austria’s largest wine-producing town, Langenlois.#winechat
  • Kamptal gets its name from the river Kamp that flows directly through it. #winechat
  • #Fritsch #Riesling stone fruits, peaches plums, apricots, granny smith apple, mean and lean wine #winechat
  • The name Wagram comes from “Wogenrain” meaning “shore” #winechat
  • Wagram is the youngest Austrian wine region in Lower Austria #winechat
  • Austria has 16 wine regions total #winechat
  • #Riesling produces full-bodied wines rich in aroma and flavor with textbook terroir attributes #winechat
  • Winery Fritsch has been a biodynamic since 2006 #winechat
  • #Riesling is a classified wine in 3 DAC regions in Austria, there are 7 total #winechat
  • #Fritsch #Riesling is all stainless, 1.7RS, 6.5acid, 12.5%abv all hand harvested #winechat #riesling

Differences

  • #German #Riesling extraordinary acidity w/ some sugar – acidity can handle higher RS if there #pg
  • #Germans trending back toward releasing dry wines to the US, historically misunderstood as all are sweet #winechat #riesling #pg
  • Understanding: #Austria’s #Riesling conversation is simple: Austrian wine is dry. Period. #winechat #riesling #pg
  • Cannot paint #Alsace with a single brush, need a lot of brushes, some sweet, some dry, always powerful #winechat #riesling #pg
  • #Alsace has a super long growing season allowing for longer ripening/more weight #pg #winechat
  • In #Riesling “convictions are enemies of truth more dangerous than lies” #itsnotallsweet #winechat #pg
