Austrian Wine is Perfect for Picnics… All Summer Long

It’s finally summer and it’s time to celebrate without outdoor barbecues and long, lazy days at the beach… and no summer is completely without delicious wines!

This time of year we step away from heavy wines and oak age and into our lighter styled reds and white wines… lucky for us, we have lots to choose from!

The following guide will keep you happy and hydrated all summer and you’ll be sure to surprise your guests along the way.

Vietnamese Shrimp Summer Rolls & Gruener Veltliner

These light, appetizing rolls are perfect when you want a refreshing snack or light lunch – they’re even easily transportable for the park! (We love this recipe from Bon Appetit.) Roll up a few and grab a bottle of Gruener Veltliner. Stick with a current vintage wine and more refreshing style such as from the Weinviertel. The spicy notes in the wine are perfect for the herbs in the roll while the delicate fruit tones complement the fresh shrimp.

Caprese Salad & Sauvignon Blanc

Styrian Sauvignon Blanc is a perfect combination of fruit and acidity without being too grassy. This makes it a perfect pairing for a simple Caprese salad that pairs wonderfully with the green character without being overpowering. We love this simple recipe from the Food Network.

Boiled/Steamed Seafood & Riesling

The high acid and somewhat saline character in Austrian Riesling makes it a perfect partner for simply seasoned seafood – think lots of lemon! Add a little heat with jerk seasoning if you’re up for the challenge… the Riesling will step up! Here is a great, simple recipe for a fantastic afternoon seafood boil, but try out steamer clams with lemon, garlic and butter for cleaner flavors.

Burgers & Zweigelt

Zweigelt with a little chill on it is the ultimate summer red wine. Plenty of spice to keep it interesting, but its fruity nature and moderate acidity make it an approachable, quaffable fun drink for everyone… especially when it’s burger time! Try out a Zweigelt with a bacon cheeseburger with a squirt of bbq sauce for a special treat. Here’s a great recipe by our friends at Serious Eats.

BBQ Ribs & Blaufraenkisch

Nothing says summer like a good old-fashioned bbq outside with friends and nothing says bbq like ribs! Pair these with a balanced Blaufrankisch offering fruit, spice, and the right amount of earthiness that elevates the rib-eating experience to unlike any others. We love this user friendly recipe from Food.com.
